Reishi is also known as ling chih, ling chih mushroom, ling-zhi, mannentake and Ganoderma. In Traditional Chinese Medicine Reishi is in the most highly rated herb category in terms of multiple benefits and lack of side effects. It is the only known source of a group of triterpenes known as ganoderic acids, which have a molecular structure similar to steroid hormones. It has the most active polysaccharides (long chains of sugars) among medicinal plant sources. Reishi also contains ergosterols, complete protein, unsaturated fatty acids, vitamins and minerals.
Reishi is used by contemporary herbalists for all sorts of wasting diseases (including AIDS and chronic (post-viral) fatigue syndrome), heart and lung problems, and emotional and spiritual discomfort and agitation; to minimize the side effects of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation treatment, and inhibit tumor growth and formation; to overcome the effects of oxygen deprivation (e.g. altitude sickness), neutralize free radicals and reverse fatty infiltration in the liver; to reduce high cholesterol, lipid levels and blood pressure; for insomnia, poor digestion, and poor concentration; for cardiovascular blockage & disease; and for poorly regulated immune response such as allergies (reduces histamine release, inhibits anaphylactic shock, and increases immunoglobulin A levels) and autoimmune diseases (e.g. myasthenia gravis). It's recommended that one take 500 to 1000 mg vitamin C along with Reishi to assist in absorption and uptake.
